At the beginning of the series, we meet Kai, Jasper’s mysterious crush, who often shows up at the library Jasper works in. As they start to have more interactions outside the library, we realize Kai doesn’t talk much... or at all really. He responds to Jasper only with his expressive face, various gestures, and through their phones. As they learn more about each other’s life and meet more often, we see their relationship start to develop romantically. However, when Kai is reminded of his complicated past, he keeps Jasper at a distance. After moving past a bit of miscommunication, Kai slowly starts to open up more and we learn just how he became, as the series title implies, muted. With the help of Jasper’s kindness, patience and guidance, he eventually communicates his feelings and thoughts verbally and faces his past head on for some much-needed closure.

3. Important Message

After seeing everything Kai went through, it should be a lesson to everyone that you should try to follow your own dreams instead of constantly trying to please others. Not doing so can wear you out both physically and mentally, as we learn through Kai’s thoughts in the series: “All my life I had been floating with the current. Following orders, pleasing everyone, being the good kid. Until I woke up one morning and my body wouldn’t function anymore. No energy left to get up, work, speak.” From Kai’s experience, we can see how damaging it is to essentially live for others so if you have something you truly enjoy doing or want to figure out what that is, go for it!
