'The Lord of the Rings' greatly influenced the development of RPGs and, with Thorin Oakenshield's treasure map, Dwarfish was a practical language to learn. Now it seems like everyone wants to learn Draconic or Infernal or one of the elemental languages - languages that their characters have no reason to expect to encounter. It's like high schools giving the option to learn ancient Urdu.
