On the surface, Flying-Fox Man and The Freek look like a simple parody of a well-known comic hero and their foremost antagonist, but for us they quickly became a potent way of exploring our mental health issues. This was inspired by being told by my ex-partner about the theory of learned helplessness. I don't subscribe to that theory, but it can be a tempting way to look at depression.
