Any Monty Python & Holy Grail fans? Learnin' Time! Learnin' Time! Many plants have openings called stomata, which aid in gas exchange. Gases can flow in through these openings. Guard cells can control the opening and closing of the stomata. Since water can escape when they are open for gas exchange, it's important that they close when it gets very hot so the plant doesn't lose too much water!
