On page one Edwin recites a verse from Hildebrand's Death Song, an old Anglo-Saxon poem about two brothers who meet in battle and have to kill each other. He recites it whenever he's worried about coming into direct conflict with Vincent. Hildebrand's Death Song is a re-occurring motif in Ottoway, inspiring much of the plot and dialogue.
