About the red bottle: Laudanum was a potent opium tincture used to treat, well, anything any everything. Long before safety caps, such substances would carry a 'poison' or skull and crossbones label. About the photo falling through the floor: In older homes, floorboards and joists would be the only thing dividing the living space from the cellar whereas modern homes are built with subfloors.
