[AA S 218 - FALL 2023] ISSUE: The normalization of hegemonic (white) American culture combined with xenophobic attitudes towards the “other” pressures individuals to assimilate to this one identity. Simultaneously, Asian Americans also face the reality of their family’s own heritage being pushed onto them. This two-way pull leads to the constant changing of one’s presentation (appearance, behavior, speech) to fit in with their home environment and the outside American world.
