Four means death, and from what I remember of learning Mandarin Chinese, having to decipher, memorise and accurately apply these four-character idioms was the bane of most grade schoolers. They're to us what leetspeak is to adults: hyper-condensed buzzwords with specific nuance relevant to a limited social circle, and undecipherable to everyone else not in the know.
