* History Note: the Election of 1848 began right after the close of the Mexican-American War. The US gained new territory, and debate over slavery intensified. In the running were former president Martin van Buren of the anti-slavery Free Soil Party, Democrat Lewis Cass who was sympathetic to pro-slavery southerns, and Whig Zachary Taylor who remained indifferent over slavery's expansion.
